Assessing Progress in Africa Toward the Millennium Development Goals

Regional MDG Report 2011

African countries should target the poor through social policies aimed at offsetting the effects of shocks and, according to “Assessing Progress in Africa toward the Millennium Development Goals”, released today.

This year’s annual report, published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the African Union Commission (AUC), shows that such policies will help the continent to forge ahead on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Africa has been making steady progress on some of the MDGs, the eight internationally-agreed targets to reduce poverty, hunger, maternal and child deaths, disease, gender inequality and environmental degradation by 2015.

But the food, fuel and financial crises, coupled with the threats from climate change and the recent instability in North Africa are likely to affect the region’s performance.

According to the report, national schemes, such as pensions, safety nets and school feeding programmes, can address the immediate needs of the most vulnerable, protect them from relapsing into poverty and impact several MDGs.
