Most MDG goals seen as within reach
The Philippines may not be able to reach all of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), but with stepped up efforts, most of the targets will be achieved by 2015.
"You may not be able to achieve all of the targets, but you will achieve an awful lot of them," Jacqueline Badcock, United Nations resident coordinator, said during the press briefing on Accelerating Achievement of the MDGs in the Philippines.
Badcock said achieving the target for maternal health is not only a struggle for the Philippines, but for other countries as well.
"But I know the government has plans to do more training for midwives, try and get better access routes for mothers to reach proper health care, and that in itself will be able to reduce maternal mortality," Badcock said.
Badcock, however, reiterated that 2015 is the target for the short term, so the goals may still be achieved and sustained beyond the target year.
During the briefing, the National Economic and Development Authority, the Department of Labor and Employment, and the National Nutrition Council, discussed the progress of the programs under the $23 million Spanish-assisted MDG Achievement Fund.
The grant was used for programs related to climate change adaptation; access to and provision of water services; youth employment and migration; and children, food security, and nutrition.
