Our Programmes
We are supporting 128 joint programmes in 49 countries from 5 regions around the world. These have been formulated within the eight programme areas that characterize the work of the MDG Fund.
Programmes are formulated at the country level to address national MDG and related development priorities, that form part of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF), the common strategic framework that guides operational activities of the United Nations system at the country level.
Over 20 UN Agencies are involved in the formulation and implementation of the MDG-F’s joint programmes, with an average of 6 Agencies participating in each programme. This methodology stimulates a more effective and comprehensive approach that builds on the value added of each specialized Agency. All Agencies are responsible for ensuring that programmes are developed in consultation with country Governments and civil societies, since one of our key aims is national ownership and the adoption of positive policy frameworks that stem from evidence created throughout implementation. With 49 countries engaged in joint programming experiences that go beyond conceptualizing and collaborating to actual joint implementation and monitoring of initiatives, we are producing concrete lessons learned that put us at the forefront of UN Reform efforts.
Our programmes focus on the local level where inequalities in national development are felt more. This is reflected in our strong partnerships with over 600 local governments. When combined with national governments and civil society groups they add up to 71% of the MDG- F’s partners.
Originally 59 countries identified by the Spanish Master Plan for International Cooperation 2005-2008 were eligible for financing from the MDG-Fund, although only 49 of these had successful proposals. The number of countries eligible in each region has had implications on the distribution of programmes amongst them with Latin America and the Caribbean implementing 54 followed by 24 in Africa, 20 in Asia, 18 in Eastern Europe and 13 in the Arab States.
Although all our programmes will be active by 2010, they did not all started in tandem since the call for the proposals of programme areas was launched in a phased manner with the last three areas - Children, Food Security and Nutrition, Conflict Prevention and Development and the Private Sector- finalizing their approvals in late 2009.
