Water is a fundamental right

"Water should not be sold, water should be protected. Take care of water. It is a fundamental human right."

For the Ecuadorian people, water is an essential and fundamental right, a basic element of "The Good Life", which is enshrined in the new Constitution of 2008. After the adoption of the Constitution, the government cancelled all debts for water consumption incurred by users in extreme poverty.

The State oversees the conservation, restoration and integrated management of water resources and watersheds, regulate activities that may affect the quantity and quality of water and acts in case of natural disasters to ensure the restoration of ecosystems.
