Homestead gardening

A farmer in  Ifugao Province inspects one of the season-responsive crops planted in her garden. Homestead vegetable gardening is intended to complement integrated food production systems (i.e. rice, maize and fish), and includes planting of pole sitao, ampalaya, eggplant, tomatoes, pechay and snap beans as season-responsive crops. It promotes women's participation, improves farm household nutrition, and, by augmenting incomes, can also hedge for sudden fluctuations in the prices of the major crops of farm households during calamities.
