Decades of civil war, pervasive poverty, widely-available weapons and weak police and judicial systems have given Guatemala one of the highest violent crime rates in Latin America. Last year, some 55 murders a week were reported in Guatemala City alone. The MDG-F is supporting initiatives to reduce violence and improve safety, including public information campaigns like this one.
