Farming organically to improve child nutrition
The province of Cimborazo, in central Ecuador, has the highest rate of child malnutrition in the country. Here, one hundred farming families are getting assistance from a UN joint programme for the organic production of 12 varieties of native potatoes as well as other crops such as wheat, barley , melloco and mashua. The MDG-F-supported farmers’ union is providing technical support as well as organizational training and organic products for pest control.
"I love the programme and the support it is giving us to move forward and to improve the lives of our children. For us, our work means no more migration, our children are developing and malnutrition is declining," says Bertha Maria Morocho, a participant in the project.
