Monitoring MDGs through an indigenous peoples’ perspective

The objective of this proposal is to increase indigenous peoples’ participation in MDGs monitoring processes through the systematization of the MDG-F programmes, the identification of best practices, lessons learned and challenges. This includes the mapping of experiences supported by the MDG-F involving indigenous peoples in the regions where the Fund currently works; the identification of four best practices for systemization and in-depth analysis; and an exchange of experiences and international visibility through an event organized in the framework of the 12^th session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

Identification of best practices in joint programmes on the inclusion indigenous peoples.

• Some of these practices include: workshops on perception about rights that would provide inputs to the programme’s formulation; use of community assemblies as decision-making mechanisms for selected aspects of the joint programme’s implementation; exchange visits among communities participating in a joint programme; active participation of indigenous representatives in programme management committees; capacity development targeting indigenous women leaders; UN-communities joint elaboration of mobility maps; and support to regulate the right to information and prior consultation.
• Used identified best practices and other information as an input to the Post 2015 working group on inequalities, particularly as the basis for recommendations on how to include the indigenous perspective into the new development agenda.

Supported the participation of indigenous representatives and leaders in various events

• Two young indigenous leaders from the joint programme in Mexico participated in the 1^st International Forum on Indigenous Youth in Mexico and eight indigenous representatives from the joint programmes in Guatemala, Costa Rica, and El Salvador participated in the IV Women’s Forum on Wangki in Waspan. This strategy has allowed further integration among indigenous organizations (some of which have participated in the MDG-F joint programmes) and the establishment of new alliances.
• Training of community trainers on integrated approaches for autonomous and sustainable development of indigenous peoples (Nicaragua).
• Seminar on Indigenous Youth organized by the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues held in January 2013.
• Organized parallel event titled “Indigenous Peoples, MDGs and the Post 2015 Agenda. Where we are? Where we are going?” to the twelfth session of this Forum that took place in New York, May 22nd 2013. The MDG-F partnered with indigenous peoples' civil society organizations and other UN agencies to highlight the role of indigenous issues in the post 2015 development agenda. In addition, FIMI organized a breakfast with indigenous leaders at the MDG-F's Secretariat with the participation of the UN Special Rapporteur on Indigenous Issues.

A multimedia tool was launched to share the MDG-F's experiences in empowering and supporting indigenous people around the world.

The website showcases lessons learned and best practices garnered from 47 joint UN programmes in 20 countries, through the audiovisual interviews to representatives from indigenous communities that participated in the MDG-F joint programmes.

The tool is aimed at development practitioners, communities and governments who might be working on similar initiatives. Experiences can be accessed by thematic window, programme stage and country. It is accessible in Spanish and English at: http://www.fimi-iiwf.org/odmdg/

Awareness campaign,
