MDG-F Supports Revision of Copyright Law in Mozambique

On the 23d August 2010, a seminar took place at the Ministry of Education in Maputo, Mozambique on the proposed revision of Mozambique’s copyright law and related rights and regulations. The seminar, organized by The National Institute of Books and Discs (INLD) is part of an overall review of the legal, regulatory and fiscal framework supporting the creative industries that is being implemented under the MDG-F Joint Programme for Cultural and Creative Industries and Inclusive Policies in Mozambique.

Copyright protection is one of the most important assets that a creator or business can have. It is an important and powerful tool for wealth creation and poverty reduction. Without effective copyright laws, artists or creators have no chance of financial gain from their creations. Copyright protection is of little economic value if these rights cannot be enforced effectively.

It is important that Mozambique has strong copyright laws in place to protect the original author, musician, or artist and ensure a strong, vibrant and fair creative economy. The revision of this law will be a crucial step towards this.

Over forty representatives from a diverse range of public, private and civil society organizations for whom the issue of copyright is relevant, participated in the seminar.
