Environment and Climate Change

Ensure Environmental Sustainability

Progress on the MDGs can only be sustained by a healthy planet.

In the disaster prone eastern seaboard of the Philippines municipal governments, academia and local citizens are working together to come up with strategies that reduce the risks associated with climate change, particularly as they affect poor and vulnerable communities. Over 40 local institutions in six pilot areas are involved in strengthening coping mechanisms and mainstreaming climate change adaptation into development planning.

We are supporting 17 joint programmes in this area with an allocation of US$89.5 million. These efforts contribute to achieving MDG 7 on environmental sustainability particularly the target of integrating the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes and reversing the loss of environmental resources.

Our work embraces the recent discourse on climate change emphasizing its impact on poor people thereby ensuring that our initiatives remain inextricably linked to issues of poverty and inequality.
